The word syncretism isn’t in the Bible. It refers to mixing two things together that aren’t meant to be mixed, resulting in something entirely different. The concept of religious syncretism (the combining of elements of God’s truth with pagan religion and human philosophies) is all throughout Scripture. Syncretism has always been an ever-present danger for God’s people everywhere, and it poses a serious challenge to the fulfillment the Great Commission. Christians today must take this danger very seriously. If they do, they will faithfully “contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints” (Jude 3), even if they don’t remember the word syncretism.
